Ephemera 43: The American Ephemera Society’s 2023 Annual Conference, Show, & Sale
From Here to There: The Ephemera of Travel
March 17-19, Old Greenwich CT
Travel is an integral part of life, whether for pleasure, business, adventure, necessity, or to visit friends or family. Ephemera 43, the 2023 ESA annual conference, will focus on aspects of travel past, present, future — even imaginary.
What’s your pleasure? A luxury cruise? Trekking the Oregon Trail? The European “grand tour”? Cross-country train trip? African safari? Travel to outer space? Perhaps you’re an armchair traveler, studying images of places you might never be able to visit or exploring the fictional realms of fantasy. Our focus is not just the destination, but also the promotion and planning, the means of getting there, and the records and remembrances that we choose to keep.
Call for Presentations
Ephemera 43 will take place at the Hyatt Regency in Old Greenwich CT, starting with a day of presentations on March 17. We’re seeking speakers who will address topics related to travel, relying heavily on tangible ephemera — posters, tickets, brochures, deck plans, official travel documents, menus, trade cards, broadsides, souvenirs, correspondence, itineraries, photographs, postcards, maps, diaries — to illustrate their subject. Each presentation will be 30 minutes long, followed by a brief Q&A.
The deadline for proposals is September 15. To submit, see instructions here. In addition, for our Young Scholars Panel on March 16, we invite proposals from undergraduate and graduate students on their use of ephemera in teaching or academic research on any subject. For details, please see “Young Scholar Projects” under the “Conference” tab on our website: www.ephemerasociety.org.
