Richard Aitken presents an illustrated lecture tracing one formative year in the life of Gwenda Jones, life-long Coburg resident, teacher and lecturer.

All our members will be aware that several years ago the RHSV accepted the very large Jones Collection – a Coburg family archive over about 100 years. Mostly it was about the life of Gwenda Jones but her parents are also well represented. Starting during COVID and continuing afterwards, historian Richard Aitken worked on organising and notating this splendid collection before it came to the RHSV. Richard was a family friend of the Jones and has added immeasurable detail to our cataloguing.

Gwenda Jones, made a great contribution to education in Victoria, including a lengthy stint at Coburg Teachers’ College and its successors during the 1960s–80s. This illustrated lecture, based on the extensive Jones Collection at the Royal Historical Society of Victoria, traces one formative year of her life, during 1953–54, when she undertook an educational study tour of Britain and Europe.
